This is very true. There are many hypochondriacs out there that could get carried away with medical websites like MD. I don’t think that the internet will ever be able to replace the knowledge and advice we receive from a live doctor.

I have always said, do not trust the face behind the computer if you cannot see them, you cannot trust them. What a lot of money to be scammed out of. This women needs jail time. I said it before and stand firm on the fact about the elderly being online is not a great idea. I believe it could be okay with supervision, but who has time to supervise someone online.

I know, you don’t really think of these types of situations until your faced with them or someone ask you the question, makes you think. I have been thinking every since this class started, it so much information about healthcare I have learned. I feel overwhelmed as if I’m not going to remember all of the information.

I think that the elderly learning the internet can be a great thing if someone takes the time to teach them how to use it. My grandfather learned how to use the computer the same time as my grandmother and he picked it up a lot quicker than she did. Her explanation was that it was to many steps to do something and that was simply turning the computer on..

As good as being able to look on Web MD or the internet to help with symptoms, I feel more at ease going to the doctor`s and talking to him about the issue. I will never be okay with replacing people with technology. I feel it is better to have a person to talk to as opposed to a computer.

Im glad the site came in handy for you and that you got the answers you were seeking. As I said before, that site has it’s pros and cons and not all people get obsessed. That site does have a positive usefulness to it and I myself use it when it comes to unusual symptoms.

I think that it is a good idea for the elderly to get involved with the internet. In today’s world we are all about social media. Seems that we do almost everything online, paperless billing, scheduling of appointments, chatting with our friends and family. I do agree that the elderly are much more at risk for becoming targets and getting scammed. I know around where I live they offer classes to help people navigate online, maybe they could come up with an internet beware class/do’s and don’ts to eliminate the possibility.

I agree if the elderly can use the online services for medical information, why not? I do believe that would help the elderly, being that most of them do not drive. I still stand firm about leaving the online situations to the younger generation, with exceptions now after reading you post.Thanks for your views

I asked my mom the other day if she uses the WebMD site at all and she told me this horrific story. A friend of hers was sick and went on the WebMD site to get some answers. For a week straight she was on that site with several different diagnosis and she became obsessed with it. The site told her she had things like cancer and possibility of TB. However, when she went to the doctor finally, she had a bug bite that had gotten infected. This lady lost sleep over her paranoia that this website had caused and wasted time on top of that. So yes, this site can be dangerous in a way.

I agree with you to some point. I do absolutely think that some individuals prey on the elderly. They know that they are normally sweet and trusting and they take advantage of that. But I do think that its a great idea for them to be educated. I think they should be able to know how to access their medical records online and I don’t think its a bad idea for them to learn how to communicate by e.mail or learn online banking. It would save them a lot of time.

I agree, proper supervision is the key word for the elderly to interact online. You are correct, anyone can be scammed, but sometimes the elderly are not in their right mindset, when they become a certain age. My grandma is one, I visit her everyday and she say…Who are you?, than a hour later she says..oh your my granddaughter..I guess age could be a factor, because when I become fifty, I will be online..lolol

I agree, Keeping in touch with your grandchildren online with pictures and playing games are okay. I have a nail technician that is from another country and her mother only see’s her children threw skype and online pictures. I believe when it comes to family interaction that is understandable. I agree. I know many individuals who regularly use Web MD, including myself. It is a very useful tool that can help you narrow down you sickness based on your symptoms. As long as you don’t rely on it fully, as it will never completely replace a face to face session with a doctor, it can be a good tool to help keep you healthy.

I also think that the website MD is a huge help to the normal none trained person answer the medical questions. I have had to use this very website in order to do research about WPW (Wolf Parkinson White) which is a type of heart condition that I had. The doctors did not do a good job of explaining the condition to me or my family, where as this website did a great job.

I agree with you on this. I’ve used web MD a couple of times to look up symptoms and end up getting even more paranoid about the situation. Now I try not to diagnose myself or anyone else. Just straight to the doctor we go.

I agree with you in that sense, but I think the website is great for gaining knowledge especially if you are going to school for something in the medical field. Yes people become obsessed and use it for the wrong purpose, but it does serve a good and positive purpose. I like to use it for small things like rashes and spider bites.
