My comment regarding elderly and the internet is simple, leave the internet to the younger generation. I cannot even imagine my grandmother chatting, dating or socializing on the internet. Criminals are looking for ways to prey upon the elder’s. I believe when elders become a certain age they are targets for schemes.The elderly can sometimes be way to nice to individuals they don’t know, which makes them targets for bad people to take advantage of them. I believe elders see good in everyone and they could possible make the wrong decision online with trust.

I have to so I didn’t even think of it in that way. The elderly patients that I work with have cell phones and laptops. One day I thought it was cute when my eighty year old patient was on Facebook, I don’t even have an account. I must agree with you its so many people out here scamming others and would not care if they are elderly or not.

Although I understand your point, I myself have to disagree. I feel with the proper supervision the elderly should be able to use the internet and social medias. Some of them use it to keep in contact with family and friends. There are so many predators out there that anyone of any age can be effected by their scams.

That is a sad story and I hope they caught that lady. That is true though, the older generation is so use to a different time that it is very hard for them to keep up with the way technology evolves. Things are so much more busier now than they were back then and it is hard for some of the elderly to keep track. I think it’s a great idea to try and teach what we can to our grandparents and older family members.

I also think its great for the elderly to be educated about technology. Everything with medical is becoming so much more with the internet and electronic records that it is a great tool for them to learn how to use it. My grandma recently got a lap top and she took a class locally in our library to learn how to use the basics of the internet and the basics of the computer.

I agree, every little bit of technology can help the elderly. I know with occupational therapy, low vision elderly clients benefit greatly from all the different technology devices.

I chose this article because I believe it is a great idea to have even the elderly educated with technology. These days, the doctor office has a program where you can go online and get all your medical record, schedule an appointment, see test results, and even email the doctor. This is very convenient for people who have a hard time traveling and who prefer to deal with medical issues from home. Even if it is a small device like an ipad, any type of knowledge of technology is great to have and I feel it would benefit any elderly patient.

This was a very interesting blog that discussed the advantages of having online resources to help with medical questions, or to give advice. Many people including senior citizens can’t afford the rising costs of health care, or may have limited mobility because of age. With websites like Web MD or Net Wellness, healthcare information is available at the click of a button. In regards to this matter I think that everyone, especially the elderly who may not be familiar with the deceitfulness of the internet, need to be aware of what sites are credible and what ones are misleading. If an individual gets on to the wrong website, it may be detrimental to their health.

I don’t agree that the older generation should not need to know how to use the internet. I do think the elderly become targets just because they are old and people think they would be easier. The technology we use today is a part of how our society functions. This means that the elderly would need to know basics of how to use the internet. My grandma knows her way around social networking sites as well as using the internet to find information, directions, etc. How do you feel about the elderly having smart phones?

I do not agree with leaving the computers to the younger generation. I know a lot of elderly people do not want to learn how to use it but there are a lot who do want to learn but people give up on them to easily. When I was overseas my grandmother learned how to use facebook, skype and email. Since then, she loves it! She always tells her older friends how it is a great tool for keeping up with her grandchildren.

I like the point you make about the elderly trusting people. They really are getting scammed a lot because, like you said, they are a trusting generation. I think they should still use technology (if they want to) but I think they need to have more knowledge about security before jumping on the computer. I think technology is a great way for grandparents to keep in touch with their grandchildren who are too busy to go see them.

I agree. The older generation is not accustomed to technology and how it works. I have heard a lot of stories lately of gypsy individuals scamming the elderly. My uncle`s dad was scammed due to meeting a lady online and eventually giving her full access to his banking information and it turned out she was married and they scammed him out of over $10,000. The older generation is used to being able to trust people and now a days that is hard to do!
